Edith van Dijk tweede op de 25 km in Dubai

01-12-2004: Op de wereldkampioenschappen open water zwemmen in Dubai was Edith van Dijk weer één van de favorieten. Op de vijf kilometer werd ze zesde. Zo was ze niet opgewassen tegen het talent van twee jonge Rusinnen, de zestienjarige Ksenia Popova, die eerste werd, en de even oude landgenote Larisa Iltsjenko.

Edith was tevreden over haar zesde plek, omdat de vijf kilometer niet haar favoriete afstand is. Op de tien kilometer werd Edith ook zesde. Ze won in 2003 in Barcelona nog brons op deze afstand. Lange tijd was ze te vinden in de kopgroep. In de sprint werd ze odner andere verslagen door de Duitse Britta Kamrau (1) en de Tsjechische Jana Pechanova (2). Het verschil met Edith was slechts enkele seconden. Op de 25 kilometer verdedigde ze haar wereldtitel, behaald in Barcelona in 2003. Ze moest echter wederom Britta Kamrau voor laten gaan. Ze werd tweede met slechts een fractie van een seconde verschil. Met het blote oog was het evrschil niet waar te nemen. Wel diende ze een protest in. De Duitse zwemster had zich niet aan de regels gehouden. Ze had tijdens de wedstrijd van de voor het eerst verplichte sensor afgedaan. Een dergelijke sensor wordt om de pols bevestigd om de eindtijd te bepalen. Het apparaat belemmerde de doorbloeding in de arm, zoals ook duidelijk te zien is op de foto met Edith, die het in tegenstelling tot haar opponenten om had gehouden. Ondanks dat Edith lange tijd de leiding had, eindigde ze als tweede.

I, too, first learned of harm reodctiun from Edith Springer and continue to be inspired by her work. She helped me think about how to use the principles of HR as a basis for a new treatment approach. It's time to get the word out that HR can be much much more than just disease prevention or overdose prevention, but can be a humane way to provide substance misuse treatment
